The Scout Plasmid

Zak McClendon from 2K Marin gives us some insight into what role the Scout Plasmid plays in BioShock 2 in our latest Q&A.

What is the Scout Plasmid?
Scout is a brand new Plasmid for Bioshock 2. It essentially allows you to “leave your body” and walk the halls of Rapture as an invisible “Scout.” Splicers can’t see or hear you, but you still have access to your full set of equipped Plasmids. You can only use a few before you zip back to your body, so use them wisely!

Why did you decide to add it into the game?
Early on in the project, we spent a lot of time thinking about and looking at how people actually play Bioshock. We looked at how they approach situations, the kind of tools and tactics they use and how they use their weapons and Plasmids to create their own playstyle. While there are a lot of players that like to run into room with guns (and Plasmids!) blazing, we found that there are some players that just like to take things a bit more slowly – peek into a room, see what lies ahead and (hopefully) get the drop on any Splicers waiting around the corner.

Scout was added to the game for these guys and gals. The ones who like to get the lay of the land and formulate an ruthlessly efficient plan of attack before exposing themselves to danger. That’s why we also allow you to use Plasmids while Scouting and, if you upgrade it enough, even hack turrets and security cameras in complete safety! Effective use of Scout will let you clear a room of danger before event stepping foot in it. When in doubt, Scout it out!

What are some of the coolest things you’ve done with Scout so far?
There’s danger around every corner in Rapture, so the most basic use for Scout is just seeing what lies ahead. The real fun comes when you get the drop on a group of Splicers – especially some of the tougher guys like a hulking Brute Splicer. In cases like this, I really like to Hypnotize the strongest guy in the room and watch him take out the rest of the opposition. If I want to be a bit more devious, I’ll lay down some Cyclone Traps, zip back to my body and make a bit of noise. It’s great to see Splicers go flying when they come to investigate.

Scout’s also really useful in some of the more high-pressure battles in Bioshock 2. If you’ve got a Big Sister on your tail and need a bit of breathing room, you can jump into Scout to turn the tables. Just make sure you manage to lose her first! If your body gets attacked while you’re Scouting, you’ll get bumped back to it!
